Course Description: Poverty in US Media and Research

What is poverty? How do individuals become poor and what if anything can the collective society at large do to prevent this? The popular American TV show “Shameless” has received over 40 award nominations, being praised
by critics and scholars alike for its “raw and authentic” portrayal of an American family living below the poverty line in the south side of Chicago. How do shows and films like these compare to research and scholarship and what does popular culture contribute to the conversation? Through examination and critical analysis of popular media, poetry, podcasts, and readings, students will dive into contemporary theories of poverty to examine related concepts of meritocracy, American capitalism, and the intersection of public health and personal hardship. (Fall 2023; Krieger School of Arts and Science, JHU)

Course Description: Euphoria – Understanding Drugs and Human Behavior

Over the centuries drug use has been conceptualized in many ways; a spiritual aid, a medicine, a coping mechanism, a disease, even a moral failing. This course seeks to examine the relationship human beings have had with mind-altering drugs, both individually and societally. We will ponder questions such as: Why has there never been a historical “drug-free” society? Is it possible to achieve a drug-free society in modern times? Is it necessary for humans to alter their consciousness? (Fall 2021; Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, JHU)
